Good morning, Laval!

You read that right: 21°C today, when the normal high for November 4 is around 8°C. It won't last: rain is back tomorrow and the mercury drops below 10°C by Saturday. So this morning, we're giving you six good spots for a walk in the woods. Also on the menu: a Laval skater on the podium, students in the spotlight and two highways closing overnight.

Weather · High 21°C · Clearing in the morning, southwest winds up to 20 km/h. Low 14°C tonight. Normal: 8°C. (Environment Canada)

This week's guide

6 woods and parks to walk while the warm weather lasts

Laval has six large woodlands, not counting its riverside parks. Trails are marked and leashed dogs are welcome. With 21°C in the forecast this afternoon, it's hard to find a better excuse to get outside.

A seasonal tip: since the time change, the sun sets at 4:37 p.m. Head out after lunch rather than after dinner, and pack a warm layer: it'll still be 14°C tonight, but it cools off fast under the trees.

Duvernay | Bois Papineau | 6.9 km of trails at 3235 Saint-Martin Blvd. East. Free parking, leashed dogs welcome, open year-round.
Sainte-Rose | Bois de l'Équerre | Nearly 13 km of trails at 49 rang de l'Équerre, including a section adapted for people with reduced mobility. Picnic area and geocaching on site.
Saint-Vincent-de-Paul | Centre de la nature | More than 50 hectares and over 5 km of trails at 901 Parc Ave., with ponds, a small farm and a greenhouse. Great with kids. Paid parking.
Sainte-Rose | Parc de la Rivière-des-Mille-Îles | Three trails, 13 km in all, in the largest protected wildlife area in the metro region. Welcome centre at 345 Sainte-Rose Blvd.: check fall hours before you go.
Fabreville | Bois de la Source | Marked trails next to Parc Saint-Édouard. About thirty volunteers just planted 150 native trees and shrubs there (see below).
Laval-des-Rapides | Parc Bernard-Landry | 30 hectares at 5 Crochet Ave.: trails, a pond, fitness stations and a 9-basket disc golf course with free disc loans. Free parking.

Today's reminder

See a vehicle stopped on the side of the road with its lights flashing? Quebec's Highway Safety Code requires you to give it a safety corridor: slow down, change lanes if you can do so safely, otherwise move as far away as possible within your lane, and stay alert until you've passed it. The rule applies to emergency vehicles, tow trucks, road patrol vehicles and those with a yellow arrow. On Monday, the Transport Ministry and Laval police handed out 300 flyers on Avenue des Bois in Laval-Ouest as a reminder. According to the ministry, failing to respect the corridor caused 8 deaths and 814 crashes in Quebec in 2023. (Courrier Laval)
Have a great day, Laval. Enjoy the sun, and see you tomorrow at 6.
